In a press briefing organised by a section of human rights activists, ADT Journalists have explained to the public through the press how their fellow workers were whisked away from their offices by armed men in a numberless drone vehicle on Thursday last week.
Edgar Matthew Karuhanga,a Journalist with Alternative Digitalk, said ADT journalists were peacefully practicing their daily duties as expected by the public until a group of armed men intruded their offices and arrested nine journalists without noticing anyone.
“We need government to give a statement on the same and produce the detainees to court if they wronged in one way or the other,” he added.
However, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga told Kakoba Media Academy the the detainees committed Communication offences and the police is still carrying on investigations on the matter.
Human rights activists passed final warning to the government about the extrajudicial killings and unlawful detention of citizens across the country.
We are reminding police of a huge mistake it is making(which is detaining people for over 48hrs without producing them to court) and the Security leaders should come up and give sound reasons for the arrest and detainment of the nine journalists whose where abouts are not known by anyone four days later ,” Nana Annet Namata,Activist, said.
They(Human rights activists) asked the authorities to release the Journalists with immediate and added that failure to do so will attract abnormal measures.
Sharon Kemigisha(a concerned citizen) asked Ugandans across the entire country to always stand up and speak up and out against all forms of injustices if they are to enjoy their freedoms given to them by the constitution of the republic of Uganda.
